Drivers That Need a DOT Physical
California law requires drivers of large commercial vehicles to take a DOT physical examination every 24 months if they:
- Operate vehicles designed to carry 15 or more passengers
- Are paid to operate vehicles designed to carry eight or more passengers
- Drive vehicles with a gross combination weight rating over 10,000 pounds
- Transport hazardous materials that require a hazmat placard
About Your DOT Physical
As with many pre-employment physicals, a DOT physical exam is a comprehensive checkup that includes:
- Hearing and vision tests
- Blood pressure and heart rate measurements
- Pulmonary function testing
- A review of your medical history
- Drug and alcohol screening
Once your DOT physical is completed, you’ll be given a copy of the certification needed by the DOT. You will be able to provide this to your employer as proof that you’ve completed your physical.
